Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist. He was the country's first black head of state and first elected President in a fully representative democratic election. He became famous whilst in prison and many South Africans and International groups supported his cause. He was freed in 1990 and worked together with the then African President F.W. de Klerk to end apartheid. In 1993 the two men were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
