Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist. He was the country's first black head of state and first elected President in a fully representative democratic election. His life was not easy as he spent 30 years in prison fighting against apartheid in South Africa. He became famous whilst in prison and many South Africans and International groups supported his cause. He was freed in 1990 and worked together with the then African President F.W. de Klerk to end apartheid. In 1993 the two men were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994 the first fully democratic election took place where everyone was allowed to vote and Nelson Mandela became President. After his Presidency he then set up the Nelson Mandela Foundation which promotes peace and the protection of human rights.
